A sunny, clear forecast at Juneau International Airport (PAJN) does not ensure that helicopters can reach the icefield. Helicopter operations require Visual Flight Rules (VFR) through mountain passes.
- Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAF): PAJN observations reflect sea-level conditions at the airport, while glacier basins have separate mountain weather patterns.
- Mountain Microclimates: Passes leading to Mendenhall, Herbert, and Norris Glaciers can experience cloud ceilings below 1,000 feet, sudden downsloping wind shears, or dense fog while downtown Juneau remains pleasant.
